The first section crosses a marsh on a long wooden boardwalk — flat, easy, and scenic in a gentle way. The boardwalk is the kind of trail that makes you think the whole hike will be a nature walk. It is not. Once the boardwalk ends and the AT begins climbing, the character changes completely. The trail becomes steep, rocky, and requires hands-on scrambling for extended sections.
The “stairway” is a series of rocky steps and scrambles that climb toward a clifftop viewpoint. The scrambling is real — not occasional hand-on-rock moments, but sustained sections where three points of contact are necessary. Experienced hikers handle it without difficulty, but first-timers consistently describe it as harder than expected. The scramble nearly the entire way up means this is not a trail you can power through on cardio alone. Balance and comfort with rocky terrain matter.
The viewpoint at the top is the payoff. A clifftop overlook provides sweeping views across the rolling farmland and forests of northwestern New Jersey. Hikers describe a “surprise at the final point” — the view opens suddenly after the rocky climb and the contrast between the effort and the reward is what gives this trail its reputation. The overlook has limited space, so expect to share it on busy days.
The return follows the same trail. The rocky scramble that was challenging going up is harder going down — loose footing and gravity work against you. The boardwalk at the end feels like a victory lap after the descent.
Officially rated moderate, but hikers consistently describe it as harder than expected. The steep, rocky sections require hands-on scrambling nearly the entire way. The difficulty catches people who saw “moderate” and expected a gentle walk. The boardwalk section reinforces that expectation before the trail abruptly changes character.
The total round trip is about 7 miles with approximately 2 hours of actual hiking time. The distance is manageable. The scrambling is the variable — athletic hikers with trail experience call it fun, while hikers without scrambling experience find it genuinely strenuous. Dogs can complete the trail, but smaller or older dogs may need assistance on the steepest scramble sections.
If you handle Stairway to Heaven comfortably, you are ready for Mount Tammany via Red Dot. The scrambling intensity is comparable, but Tammany is steeper per mile and the exposure at the summit is more dramatic.
Fall foliage from the summit overlook is excellent. Spring is good after the boardwalk dries out — the marsh section can be wet into late April. Summer works with early starts. Winter is possible but the rocky scramble sections ice over and become genuinely hazardous without traction gear.
The trail gets noticeably busy on warm weekends and spring Saturdays. Weekday mornings — especially Tuesday mornings per experienced hikers — offer the best combination of quiet trails and easy parking. The trailhead parking is free but the overflow lot charges $8.50-$9, so arriving early saves money and hassle.
The trailhead is on Wawayanda State Park access road off Route 94 in Vernon, New Jersey. Free parking at the trailhead lot; $8.50 at the overflow lot. The trailhead spots fill first, so arrive early on weekends to avoid the fee. No restrooms at the trailhead. The nearest services are in Vernon, about 10 minutes away.
Cell service is adequate at the summit overlook but patchy on the wooded trail sections. The trail follows AT white blazes and is well-marked. Bring sturdy boots with ankle support — the rocky scramble sections are demanding and sneakers create unnecessary risk. Water is available from a stream crossing on the lower section but not on the upper climb.
The drive from NYC is about 75 minutes via Route 23. From northern New Jersey suburbs, about 45 minutes. Stairway to Heaven is often combined with a visit to High Point Monument, about 30 minutes north, for a full day of NJ hiking.
The boardwalk-to-scramble transition is what makes Stairway to Heaven memorable. One minute you are strolling across a marsh. Ten minutes later you are pulling yourself up rock faces. The contrast is jarring in the best way — it prevents the trail from ever feeling monotonous. And the surprise view at the top, opening suddenly after a particularly steep scramble, is the kind of moment that makes you stop and forget about your burning quads for a minute. The name is earned.
