Best Hikes in Tennessee

10 trail guides across Tennessee.

The three Tennessee trails in this collection are all on the TN side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, accessible from Gatlinburg and Townsend. They cover the full range of what the Smokies offer: Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte for the big mountain experience, Chimney Tops for the scramble, Ramsey Cascades for the best waterfall in the park. If you're driving through East Tennessee and have a day, these are the three trails worth prioritizing.

Mount LeConte is the marquee hike on the Tennessee side. At 6,593 feet it's the third-highest peak in the Smokies and the most prominent from the Gatlinburg valley. The Alum Cave Trail is the standard approach — 11 miles round trip with 2,763 feet of gain, passing Arch Rock, Alum Cave Bluffs (a massive concave bluff with a sulfur spring), and a series of exposed ridge sections with cable handholds near the summit. It's a full day and genuinely tiring, but the summit views and the variety of terrain on the way up make it the best single hike in the Tennessee Smokies.

Chimney Tops is a different kind of hike: shorter (4 miles round trip), but the last section is a steep scramble up bare rock to twin rocky pinnacles at 4,755 feet. The exposure and the views down into the Sugarland Valley are better than the moderate mileage suggests. It's one of the more distinctive summit experiences in the park precisely because it looks so different from the forested ridge tops everywhere else.

Ramsey Cascades is the tallest waterfall in the national park at 100 feet, reached via an 8-mile round trip through old-growth forest in the Greenbrier area. The trees on this trail are genuinely massive — some of the largest yellow poplars in the eastern US grow along Ramsey Prong. The waterfall at the end drops in stages over mossy boulders into a deep plunge pool. It's a longer approach than the other Smokies waterfalls but the combination of forest and payoff makes it worth the miles.

Best Time to Hike in Tennessee

Mid-October for fall color in the Smokies, which typically peaks slightly later than the NC side at similar elevations. Spring wildflowers (mid-April through May) are a genuine reason to visit — the Smokies have one of the most diverse wildflower displays in North America. Summer is hot in the valley but the upper elevations of LeConte stay cooler. The Alum Cave Trail is accessible year-round but can be icy above the bluffs in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Great Smoky Mountains National Park free? Yes — no entry fee, which makes it unusual among major national parks. Parking passes ($5/day or $15/week) are required at most developed trailheads. Some areas also require timed-entry reservations during peak season.

What is the best hike in the Smokies? Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte for the full Smokies experience. Chimney Tops if you want something shorter with a genuine scramble. Andrews Bald on the NC side if you want an open grassy summit with minimal crowds.

How hard is the Alum Cave Trail to Mount LeConte? Hard. The 11-mile round trip with 2,763 feet of gain takes most hikers 6-8 hours. The trail is well-maintained but the upper section involves exposed ridge walking with cable assists. Not a beginner trail.
