Best Hikes Near Boston in 2026 — 12 Trails Worth the Drive

12 hand-picked trail guides within driving distance.

TL;DR: The best hikes near Boston are Blue Hills (10 miles from downtown, skyline views), Middlesex Fells (accessible from the Orange Line), and Mount Wachusett (highest point in eastern MA, one hour west). For a bigger mountain day, Franconia Ridge in the White Mountains is 2.5 hours north.

Boston isn’t a hiking city the way Denver or Seattle is, but the trails within two hours of it are better than most people realize. Rocky ridgelines ten miles from downtown, boulder caves an hour southwest, and genuine mountain summits that rival anything in northern New England. Here’s what I’d recommend.

Under 30 Minutes

Blue Hills is the closest real summit to the city — 10 miles south of downtown with a stone observation tower, skyline views, and 125 miles of trails across 7,000 acres. The Red Dot Trail to Great Blue Hill is a quick mile of rocky scrambling. The 9-mile Skyline Trail hits every peak in the reservation for a full day.

Middlesex Fells is even closer — accessible from the Orange Line. The 6.9-mile Skyline Trail is rougher than it has any right to be for suburban Massachusetts: exposed ledge, boulder scrambles, and hilltop views. The best urban-adjacent trail system in New England.

One Hour

Mount Wachusett is the highest point in eastern Massachusetts at 2,006 feet. An hour west on Route 2, the summit views stretch from Monadnock to the Boston skyline. Multiple trail options from quick summit bags to longer forest loops. This is the mountain Boston hikers graduate to after Blue Hills.

Purgatory Chasm in Sutton is unlike anything else in the state — a 70-foot-deep granite rift where the trail goes through, over, and between house-sized boulders. Short but memorable. Squeeze through Fat Man’s Misery and climb the Devil’s Pulpit. Kids love it, adults are surprised by it.

90 Minutes to Two Hours

Mount Holyoke at Skinner State Park has the most famous view in the Connecticut River Valley — the same oxbow bend that Thomas Cole painted in 1836. The Summit House sits at the top with panoramic views east and west. A short, steep hike with outsized scenery.

Bash Bish Falls in the far southwest corner of the state is the highest single-drop waterfall in Massachusetts. The trail from the upper lot is a half-mile descent to a 60-foot cascade pouring into a deep pool at the New York border. Combine it with a drive through the Berkshires.

Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire, is about two hours north. A boardwalk threads through a narrow granite gorge with 90-foot walls, covered bridges, and waterfalls. It’s a paid attraction and worth every dollar — one of the most photogenic short walks in New England.

Mount Cardigan in western New Hampshire has a bare granite summit with a fire tower and views across the Lakes Region. The West Ridge Trail is 1.5 miles of open rock — feels like the Whites without the crowds or the commitment. Two hours from Boston, excellent for families.

The Bigger Mountains (2-2.5 Hours)

Mount Greylock is the Massachusetts highpoint at 3,489 feet. The Thunderbolt Trail is 2,200 feet of gain in 2 miles. The Hopper Trail climbs through one of the few old-growth spruce stands in the state. Five-state views from the summit tower and dinner at Bascom Lodge if you time it right.

Franconia Ridge is the classic New Hampshire hike — a loop over Mount Lafayette and Mount Lincoln with an exposed alpine ridgeline connecting the two. It’s the best above-treeline hiking in the Northeast and about 2.5 hours from Boston. Go on a weekday if you can.

Mount Tammany at the Delaware Water Gap is a stretch at 4+ hours, but the NJ and MA hiking communities overlap enough that it belongs on the radar. If you’re doing a weekend trip south, the Red Dot scramble to the gap overlook is one of the best short hikes on the East Coast.

Precipice Trail in Acadia National Park is about 4 hours from Boston, but it’s the hike that every New England scramble enthusiast makes a pilgrimage to eventually. Iron rungs on a sheer cliff above the Atlantic. Worth the drive at least once.

How I’d Pick

After work: Blue Hills. Weekend morning: Wachusett. Unique experience: Purgatory Chasm. Best views per effort: Mount Holyoke. Best waterfall: Bash Bish Falls. Best mountain day trip: Franconia Ridge. Best for kids: Flume Gorge. Bucket list: Precipice Trail.

Half that bucket list overlaps with our picks for the best hikes on the East Coast — New England hikers have a head start on it.
