Best Hikes in North Carolina

26 trail guides across North Carolina.

If I had to pick one state on the East Coast with the strongest concentration of hikes I actually want to do, it would be western North Carolina. The southern Appalachians pack more variety into a single region than anywhere else east of the Rockies: Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, the Linville Gorge wilderness, DuPont State Forest, and a string of fire towers that require real backcountry effort. Add Asheville as a base and you have a trail landscape that rewards a full week of hiking without repeating terrain.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park anchors the southwestern corner. Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet is the highest point on the AT and the most-visited spot in the park, but the real hiking is on trails like Charlie's Bunion and Andrews Bald. Charlie's Bunion is an exposed rocky outcrop with genuine drop-off views over the Tennessee ridge country. One of the best summit experiences in the park. Andrews Bald reaches one of the only open grassy balds in the Smokies at 5,920 feet, a 3.6-mile round trip through spruce-fir forest that feels completely different from the valley trails below.

The Blue Ridge Parkway corridor running northeast from Asheville is a different character entirely. Black Balsam Knob and the Shining Rock Wilderness give you exposed high-elevation terrain above 6,000 feet without the Smokies crowds. Graveyard Fields has two waterfalls within a mile of the parking lot. Devil's Courthouse is a short, steep scramble to an exposed quartzite summit at 5,462 feet with views I'd put against anything in the state. Mount Pisgah, Mount Mitchell and Craggy Gardens round out the BRP section, along with Rough Ridge near Grandfather Mountain. Rough Ridge in particular has some of the most dramatic ledge walking on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway.

Pisgah National Forest fills in the gaps between the park and the Parkway. Looking Glass Rock is one of the most recognizable granite domes in the South. A 6.3-mile round trip with views over the Davidson River Valley. John Rock, directly across the valley, is quieter and arguably better. Moore Cove Falls and Catawba Falls cover the waterfall side of Pisgah. DuPont State Forest to the south gets you Triple Falls, High Falls, and Hooker Falls on the Little River in quick succession — the most efficient waterfall hiking in the state.

The fire towers here require genuine effort. Albert Mountain is one of the most exposed scrambles on the entire AT south of the White Mountains. Cowee Bald, Barnett Knob and Joanna Bald are backcountry forest service road approaches that keep the foot traffic low. The payoff is complete solitude and long ridge views across the Nantahala. Linville Gorge adds Table Rock and Grandfather Mountain to the northeast, both with exposed summit terrain that punches well above their elevation in difficulty and views.

Best Time to Hike in North Carolina

Mid to late October for fall color, which peaks slightly later than New England. Typically the third week of October at elevation. The Smokies are busy year-round but fall weekdays are manageable. Spring wildflowers in the Smokies (late April through May) are worth planning around. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah trails are accessible May through November; some high-elevation roads close in winter. Summer works at elevation but the valleys are hot.
