14 trail guides across Maine.
Maine has more trail miles than any other New England state, and its backcountry character is different from the Whites or the Greens — the trailheads are harder to reach, the services thinner, the sense of genuine wilderness proportionally higher. The fire tower collection here sits on summits in the North Maine Woods and western highlands that require planning the drive almost as much as the hike.
Deboullie Mountain in Aroostook County is the most remote trail in this collection. The North Maine Woods gate, logging roads, and permit-required access keep it quiet in a way that feels intentional. The tower view over Deboullie Pond and the Quebec border country is exceptional. Moose sightings near the pond are common, especially in early morning. This is not a day trip from anywhere south of Bangor.
Chase Hill Fire Tower in Oxford County is more accessible. A moderate hike through western Maine forest to a restored tower with views over the lake country toward New Hampshire. The western Maine highland between the White Mountains and Rangeley is underused hiking territory that rewards hikers willing to venture off the Acadia-and-Baxter circuit.
Beech Mountain Fire Tower in Acadia National Park is the outlier. An easy 4-mile hike to a tower with close views over Echo Lake and the surrounding Acadia coastline. A quieter alternative to Cadillac Mountain's crowds.
Late June through September. Blackflies are brutal in June through early July. Serious enough to make trailhead decisions for you if you're not prepared. September is the best month: blackflies gone, summer humidity broken, foliage starting at elevation. The North Maine Woods access roads may close or become impassable outside the summer-fall window.
How do I access the North Maine Woods? Pay the day-use fee at the gate checkpoint. Cash or credit accepted. The roads beyond are logging roads. Passable in a normal vehicle in dry conditions, not after heavy rain.
Is Acadia National Park worth it for hiking? Yes. Beech Mountain is one of several good hiking options in the park. The Acadia trail system is well-maintained and scenic. Parking reservations required for popular areas May-October.
What is the best hike in Maine? Katahdin (not in this collection) is the answer most serious hikers give. Within this collection, Deboullie Mountain for the remote experience, Beech Mountain for the coastal Acadia views.
