What to Expect

The 4.7-mile out-and-back climbs roughly 1,400 feet through boreal forest to reach the tower. The lower trail follows a logging road corridor before transitioning to a steeper footpath through dense spruce and fir. Deboullie Pond sits below the summit and is worth a glance on the way up — it’s the kind of still, black-water lake that looks like it’s hiding something. The tower itself is in decent shape and offers unobstructed views across the North Maine Woods to Canada on clear days.

The surrounding Deboullie Public Reserved Land has several other ponds and a trail network, but the mountain route is the main draw. Wildlife sightings are common — moose frequent the pond area, especially mornings.

Difficulty

Rated hard primarily due to the remoteness, not the technical terrain. The climb is steep but straightforward. The real difficulty is getting here — the access road is a logging road requiring a permit fee to enter the North Maine Woods gate, and the drive on gravel takes longer than you’d expect. Do not count on cell service.

Best Time to Go

Late June through September. The road to the trailhead may be impassable or closed outside this window. Blackflies are brutal in June — bring serious bug protection. September is quieter and the bugs are gone.

Before You Go

Pay the North Maine Woods day-use fee at the gate before entering. The nearest real services are in Presque Isle or Eagle Lake, over an hour away. Fill your tank before turning off the paved road. This is not a day trip from anywhere south of Bangor.
