Great Island Trail is the longest and wildest hike on Cape Cod — 8 miles of beach, marsh, forest, and dune walking on a peninsula jutting into Wellfleet Harbor. No boardwalks, no crowds, no gift shops. Just sand, salt, and the kind of raw coastal landscape that most of Cape Cod has paved over.

What to Expect

The trail loops through pitch pine forest, across salt marshes where fiddler crabs scatter at your feet, over sand dunes, and along miles of empty beach. The highlight is Jeremy Point at the southern tip — a sand spit reaching into Cape Cod Bay that feels like the edge of the world. Tide timing matters: the marsh crossings and beach sections change dramatically between high and low water.

The walking is harder than it looks. Sand is slow and tiring, especially on the beach return. Multiple hikers report underestimating the 8-mile distance because of the soft footing.

Difficulty

Moderate due to distance and sand walking, not elevation. Physically tiring despite being flat. The beach portion in soft sand can slow your pace significantly. Plan for 3-5 hours. Bring more water than you think — there’s no shade on the beach sections and no water sources on the trail.

Best Time to Go

Time your hike around low tide for the best conditions at Jeremy Point and the easiest marsh crossings. Fall is ideal — fewer bugs, cooler temperatures, and migrating shorebirds. Spring brings cold-stunned sea turtles (report sightings to NOAA). Summer is hot with horse flies on the beach sections.

Before You Go

Free parking at the Great Island trailhead in Wellfleet (within Cape Cod National Seashore but no fee at this lot). Download your map — the trail can be confusing where forest meets beach. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and extra water. Watch for poison ivy on the forest sections. Sneakers work but expect sand in everything.
