What to Expect

Rose River Falls is a 67-foot tiered cascade tucked into a forested hollow off Fishers Gap Overlook. It’s less crowded than Dark Hollow Falls — which is just a mile and a half up Skyline Drive — but gives you more for your effort. The standard out-and-back is 2.6 miles round trip, though you can extend it to a 4-mile loop via the fire road if you want a more varied day.

The trail drops down into the Rose River drainage on a rocky footpath through mixed hardwood, following the river upstream to the base of the falls. The cascade splits into two tiers over a wide basalt ledge, and there’s a good flat area at the base for taking in the view without getting jostled. The loop option continues up and around via an old fire road that adds context — you get a sense of the watershed and the overall terrain rather than just in-and-out to one feature. Either way, this is a quieter alternative to the main Dark Hollow parking scrum.

Difficulty

Moderate. The 2.6-mile round trip gains about 850 feet total (descent on the way in, return climb on the way out). The footing is rocky and rooty through much of the lower section. The loop adds distance but spreads the elevation gain more evenly. Good trail for someone who wants a real hike with a waterfall at the end rather than a 15-minute descent to a photo op.

Best Time to Go

Spring is the obvious choice for volume — Rose River runs strong through April and May, and the falls are at full power. The lower trail has wildflowers in the understory in April. Fall color peaks here in the second and third weeks of October and the loop option makes for a particularly good fall foliage hike. Summer is doable but the lower forest section is humid and the flow is reduced.

Before You Go

Trailhead at Fishers Gap Overlook, Mile 49.4 on Skyline Drive, about 2.5 hours from DC via I-66 and US-211. The overlook parking lot is smaller than the Dark Hollow lot — maybe 20 cars — so it fills up on peak weekends too. Park entrance fee applies ($35/vehicle weekly). No restrooms at the overlook. The Byrd Visitor Center at Mile 51 is 1.6 miles south. Cell service is effectively nonexistent on the trail.
