Best Hikes in New York

45 trail guides across New York.

New York has more hiking variety than any other state on the East Coast — the Adirondacks, the Catskills, the Hudson Highlands, the Taconics, and the Finger Lakes all offer completely different terrain within a few hours of each other. The Adirondacks are the centerpiece: 46 peaks over 4,000 feet, genuine alpine exposure above treeline, and trail systems that reward multi-day planning. The Catskills trade elevation for atmosphere. Dense boreal forest, fire towers with 360-degree views, waterfalls like Kaaterskill Falls that feel surprisingly remote for being two hours from the city.

Fire tower hikes are something of a New York specialty. The state has restored dozens of historic towers across both ranges, and the ECH collection covers more than a dozen of them. If you haven't stood in a fire tower cab in the Adirondacks with Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains spread out to the east, it belongs on the list.

The Catskill 3500 Club maintains its own challenge list of peaks above 3,500 feet — 35 summits that keep hikers occupied for years. Several of those peaks (Balsam, Eagle, Giant Ledge, the Blackhead Range) are in this collection. The Catskills also have the best leaf-peeping timing on the East Coast: mid-October, the ridge color is outstanding and the Hudson Valley views from the escarpment peaks are the kind of thing you return to every year.

The Hudson Highlands. Anthony's Nose, Little Stony Point, Constitutional Marsh. These offer shorter, lower-elevation hikes that punch above their weight on scenery. Easy Metro-North access makes them underrated day trips from New York City.

Best Time to Hike in New York

Mid-September through mid-October is the best four-week window in the state. Temperatures drop, humidity breaks, and the foliage on the Catskill escarpment and Adirondack ridges peaks right around Columbus Day weekend. Summer is good at elevation in the Adirondacks where the heat doesn't penetrate the spruce-fir zone, but the lower trails are buggy through July. Spring mud season (April through late May) is genuine — the Adirondack lower trails stay wet well into June.
