Every year, thousands of hikers touch the bronze plaque on this summit and start walking north toward Maine — 2,190 miles away. Even if you’re not thru-hiking, standing at the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and looking out over the Georgia Blue Ridge is a meaningful experience. The summit sits at 3,782 feet in a clearing of windswept oaks with a modest but satisfying view south.
The shortest approach is from the USFS parking area on Forest Service Road 42, which cuts the hike to about 2 miles round trip on the AT approach trail. The more scenic option starts at Amicalola Falls State Park and follows the 8.5-mile approach trail through the forest, gaining about 2,500 feet total. That’s the route most thru-hikers take, and it’s a solid day hike in its own right. The forest here is dense second-growth hardwood — tulip poplar, white oak, hickory — with mountain laurel understory that blooms in late May.
Easy from the USFS road (2 miles round trip, 300 feet gain). Moderate to hard from Amicalola Falls (17 miles round trip if you come back the same way, or arrange a shuttle). The short route is honestly anticlimactic if you’re a strong hiker — it’s a walk in the woods to a plaque. The Amicalola approach gives the experience more weight. Either way, the trail surface is standard southern AT: packed dirt, moderate grade, no scrambling.
Late March through mid-April if you want to see thru-hikers starting their journeys — there’s an energy at the terminus in early spring that’s hard to describe. Fall color peaks here in late October. The lower elevation means Georgia’s hiking season extends well beyond what New England allows. Winter is quiet and the trail is usually clear of snow, though the USFS access roads can be rough after rain.
For the short route: take USFS Road 42 from the Doublehead Gap area. The road is gravel and can be rough — high clearance helps but isn’t required in dry conditions. Small parking area at the trailhead. For the Amicalola approach: Amicalola Falls State Park is off GA-52 near Dawsonville, about 75 minutes from Atlanta. $5 state park parking fee. Restrooms and a visitor center at the lodge. Register your hike at the AT approach trail sign. No services between the park and the summit.
